30th November 2010

Snowbound at home, with an unheard of 10 inches in my garden in the middle of Edinburgh…

I did however, make it through the snow on Friday to Newcastle, to take part in the North East heat of the Kids Lit Quiz. There should have been 40 teams taking part (!!), but 16 of them didn’t make it because of the weather. It was still a great contest though. I was part of the authors team along with Linda Strachan, Emma Barnes and David Williams. We were very keen to beat  the team of local Librarians and had been reading hard in preparation. I’m delighted to say we managed to do it. The winners of the heat were Hexham School who I hope have got to Oxford for the UK final today… I’ll have to check Wayne Mills blog later.

Meanwhile, if the snow stays off this aftenoon, I’m going to try to get to Blackwell’s bookshop so I can support their Christmas Charity, the Children’s Book Tree. If you haven’t heard of it, see what Blackwell’s say about it here:

The Children’s Book Tree is a special way to gift a book to a child in the city who is living in care or in difficult circumstances and would otherwise receive very little for Christmas.

We contact local children’s charities, foster homes and women’s shelters to ask if they would like to be involved.

Those wishing to take part ask the children to choose a particular book or subject they would like to read about. We write these requests on Christmas tags and hang them on the ‘Book Tree’ in the Children’s department of the shop. This year we will also have ‘Book Trees’ at RBS Blackwell and the City of Edinburgh Council offices.

Members of the public can then pick a tag from the tree and buy a book for one of the children. We gift-wrap the books and send them out to the organisations who pass them on to the children in time for Christmas.

What a great idea! Please support it.
