Support your local library!

Theresa and Julia handing in the protest

I joined a large and jolly crew of writers, illustrators, librarians and concerned citizens yesterday to protest outside the Scottish Parliament over proposed cuts to library funding. There were readings, photos and speeches, then Julia Donaldson and Theresa Breslin handed in a protest statement. For an event that had sprung from nowhere in a few days (thanks mainly to Theresa and Julia), it’s attracted a lot of support, and a lot of media attention. Let’s just hope that this helps persuade all our MSPs that libraries and librarians are essential in a society that’s always claiming to be committed to education, and to care about the more vulnerable members of the community. If you feel as strongly about this as I do, then let the decision-makers know!
