My Advent Calendar

adventI have decided to blog an Advent Calendar; in other words to post a short blog every day until Christmas eve. It’s going to have a daily quote, and a selection of  books I would have to replace instantly if my bookshelves were vaporised. And maybe other stuff. If I have time.

Quote of the day: ‘No man but a blockhead ever wrote, except for money.’ (Samual Johnston). That’s all of us who ever wrote for love, or from compulsion, put in our places then.

Book of the day: Villette  by Charlotte Bronte. Not as well known as Jane Eyre, but at least as good. Features a fabulous opium dream and a carpet-chewingly ambiguous ending.

There’s a cocktail sausage sized interview with me on the Pushkin Prize website, should you want to read some more.

See you tomorrow!
