December 12th: Not the End of the World

imagesCAAD0NW1Well, how was the apocalypse for you? Yeah, bit of a damp squib, really. The photo has nothing to do with anything else in the post. I just like pigs, and this one looked so happy…

And a quote on the theme of apocalypse/no apocalypse from George W Bush. ‘We are ready for any unforseen event that may or may not occur.’

From the burning bookshelves, a sort-of apocalyptic book to continue the theme is The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis, a science fiction writer who isn’t nearly as well known in the UK as she deserves to be. A time travelling historian is sent back from Oxford in the near future to research the Black Death in an English village. Meanwhile, a new pandemic breaks out in Oxford… Nothing ever works out as you expect it to in a Willis book, and this is no exception, so you can never relax thinking any character is safe and will definitely make it through to the end of the book. Highly recommended

  1. Have noted down The Doomsday Book – thanks!

  2. P.S. I see your happy pig and raise you an ecstatic stoat. (http://joanlennon.blogspot.co.uk/2012/12/weasel.html)

    • I love my pig, but your stoat wins hands down!
