December 16th: Tree Buying Day

imagesCAPNN3WOHave just been to buy the Christmas tree, so feeling very festive. Our decorations are more or less a historical record of the family, with things the kids made at nursery and primary school in among the bought stuff. I’m always suspicious of those who have a smart ‘themed’ tree and chuck out the old things every year; I feel they’re missing the point somehow.

“My first copies of Treasure Island and Huckleberry Finn still have some blue-spruce needles scattered in the pages. They smell of Christmas still.” (Charlton Heston)

Book of the day is The Time Traveller’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. Was I the only person who thought this was some sort of wind-up on first seeing the title and author’s name? Anyway, Audrey, I stand in awe of you. Apart from loving the story, I can’t comprehend how Niffenegger managed to keep the timelines straight in her head. I can only imagine her entire house was covered in huge charts of what age the various characters were in what scene, and who met who when. Even thinking about it makes my eyes water.
