The Wonderful Thing About Tiggers…

tiggerI can’t properly express how charmed I am to find – thanks to Dara O’Briain’s Science Club – that the first artificial heart was designed by Tigger and Dick Dastardly.  If you don’t watch the program, you really should. It’s great to see proper, intelligent science being presented as something cool on TV (though I wasn’t completely convinced by the time-travelling rats).

Anyway, if you didn’t see it you’ll be wondering what on earth I can be on about. Turns out that the man who voiced Tigger and Dick Dastardly among others,  – Paul Winchell – was a medical student before he became a ventriloquist and voice over artist. He and Doctor Henry Heimlich – yes, as in the Heimlich manoeuvre – designed an artificial heart. Their design was never actually used, but isn’t that a wonderful piece of scientific trivia?

I’m sure that more facts like that in school science courses would pique pupils’ interest!

  1. Yes! I love Science Club – bacteria in clouds – slow-mo explosions – that mirrored lens for macular degeneration – great stuff!

    • I forgot about the lens – that has really exciting possibilities for the future!
