Summer in Scotland: Umbrella at the Ready.

_83999586_lightningkitcarruthersJust watching the rain pour down again, as the glorious Scottish summer continues, though at least there’s no lightning this time, unlike the storm pictured from a couple of weeks ago. It’s most provoking, especially if you’ve just been watching the Davis Cup (Go, Andy!) played in proper glorious sunshine in London.

So what have I been up to? Well, escaping the glorious Scottish summer, with a week on Corfu in the company of Elder Child. Boy, it was hot. Boy, it was sunny. Boy, there was no sign of any of the economic problems that are making so many headlines just now. I’m not stupid enough to think they don’t exist, but their impact on the islands is very different from that on the mainland, from what the Corfiots are saying.

Apart from being a holiday, it was something of a research trip for the reading workshop I’m leading at the Edinburgh Book Festival next month on Gerald and Lawrence Durrell’s Corfu books. I also took some of the many other books I need to read to prepare for the bookfest, including the truly mind-scrambling Universe in Your Hand by Christophe Galfard. There are moments when I almost think I understand quarks….

Back home now, madly typing up the new novel and trying to read all the other bookfest volumes, and keep up with the garden, and make jam, and ……
